Carlos Santana is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. I once heard a rumor that Paul Reed Smith turned down several famous guitar players to have a special model PRS guitar and would only create one for Carlos Santana. Even though the rumor is false, it always seemed plausible because he really is that good. On July 15 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, he proved it to a sold out crowd. With 40 years of musical mastery to work with, Santana had the crowd dancing, clapping, and singing along the entire show.
The show was supposed to start at 8 p.m., but Santana and his 10 piece band came on stage 5 minutes early. Many fans had to run to their seat so they wouldn’t miss anything. The 2 and 1/2 hour set included hits like “Black Magic Woman,” “Maria Maria,” and "Smooth” as well as covers by Tito Puente and The Doors. There was really something for everyone in the crowd. Santana’s music has a way of transcending age and even musical taste. It’s hard to pin down exactly what genre to fit his music into, but it was exactly what the crowd wanted to hear.
Carlos Santana is a music legend. His music brings people together and you can tell that he loves being able to do that night after night. This was a must see show. If you have the opportunity to see Santana live, take it!
